Thanks to my father, I have been involved with trains and railfanning for the last 23 years. We Moved up to Montana in 1995, and now are where most of my videos are recorded. A new thing for me is the including of real life sounds and editing them into model train videos.

Montana Rail Link Freights in the years of 2021-2023
I finally sat down and edited some of the better videos of the Montana Rail Link freight movements captured from the past three years. With the Montana Rail Link being gone I figure its time to share what I have captured. The lighting and wind noise makes some videos subpar but all are worth sharing.

Railfanning trip to Helena, MT Spring 2024

The yearly trip to Helena was remembered with a decent amount rail traffic having different combinations of locomotive power on most of the trains that were captured. Although the independent operations of the Montana Rail Link are no more, plenty of MRL locomotives were still plying the rails and keeping the traffic moving. Railfanning the area of Mullan Pass on April 27, 2024 the dispatcher was talking to a eastbound empty coal train telling them they will be waiting for two trains before they can proceed. One was loaded coal train and one was a extra local movement. Unknown to us that the local would be led by MRL GP9 109 and SD40-2XR 262 definitely a rare movement. It was a good day to assemble some trains for a consist. Three separate container trains at the beginning, then two of them combined into one. NEVER GiVE UP 🎶
ElectroMotive Diesel (EMD) should include THIS in their sales campaigns, EMD locomotives doing what they do best ... after that crewman's "We can't do that." THIS is why I love railfanning EMD locomotives, they've never had "GIVE UP" as a throttle setting.
Emd doesn’t exist or make locomotives anymore and their predecessors progress rail have done an awful job.

Fantastic. Exactly what Mullan Pass is all about. Very well captured too
One locomotive is 3.200 HPS but torque is huge 12,600 Nm !
SD70ACe clocks the dynomometer at about 4,500 hp. Others like the SD70MAC at the tail end of the train generate about 4,000 hp. I think that lone GE unit up front puts out about 4,400 hp. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that even the 4,000 hp SD70MAC generates more tractive effort than the GE C44-9W. Yeah, I'm biased toward EMD and have been since I was a kid. I'm 69yo now.

I think I recognize the location. Isn't there an exit off the interstate that leads up the hill to that grade crossing? That farmhouse looks familiar.

All MRL crews there. The BNSF led trains are haulage trains. BNSF provides the trains, MRL the crews.

Oh, yes, before the super fleet units in the warbonnet paint came, they had units in the Kodachrome paint scheme from the Southern Pacific Santa Fe merger which was denied.
